choosing the right artwork. Below are some simple tips for selecting the perfect piece to enhance and complement your space:
Size is probably the most important consideration when choosing artwork. If you live in an open plan converted warehouse, make sure your the artwork is big enough to fill a large wall space. If your interior is a cosy terrace choose a smaller canvas. As a helpful guide measure and cut the desired shape out of brown paper and temporarily fix to the wall. This will give you an idea of whether your chosen size will suit your space.
Be creative with placement. Artwork doesn't have to hang on a wall. Lean a canvas on top of your mantlepiece or prop smaller canvases up on shelves for a more relaxed, eclectic style.
Don't try to match artwork exactly to your rugs, bedding or furniture, it might look too planned. Also, if your chosen shade is not an exact match you could end up with clashing colours (unless it's the look you're going for in which case go for it!). Try to find a complementary colour instead, or be bold with a contrasting colour accent. If in doubt go for simple neutral shades or black and white.
Consider the lighting in your space. If you are choosing artwork for a bar or cafe which will mainly use artificial light go for stronger, richer shades as they will need to stand out in dim lighting. If you are decorating an office space with lots of natural light subtle shades may be more suitable. It's best to hang artwork in a well lit area but away from direct sunlight.
Hang your artwork so the middle of the canvas is at eye level, approx. 1.5 metres off the floor. Select a shape to complement the furniture and wall space eg. a long rectangular canvas would look effective centred above a sofa or long sideboard. Square artwork may suit narrow spaces eg. between a window and a corner of the room, above a mantle or at the end of a hallway. Small canvases can be grouped with several other artworks or photos and hung as a block for a striking display.
Use canvas art to cleverly update your decor without breaking the bank. You can be more adventurous when choosing accessories because they can be more easily replaced over time than large furniture pieces. If you have a neutral colour scheme in your home it's the perfect way to add a bright splash of colour.
Above all - choose an artwork you like to look at! It will be a part of your everyday surroundings.
